Texas Supreme Court pauses depositions in Paxton whistleblower case

The ruling comes after months, years, of legal challenges by Paxton in hopes of avoiding a deposition.

TEXAS, USA — The Texas Supreme Court Tuesday granted Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s request for an emergency stay to pause depositions set for Thursday in connection with a whistleblower lawsuit.

Depositions in the case were set to begin on Feb. 1. The Texas Supreme Court's order gives the parties until Feb. 29 to respond with broader legal arguments.

Former President Donald Trump in a post Tuesday morning called for the Supreme Court of Texas to intervene and end the case.

Earlier this month, a Travis County Judge had ordered Paxton and three top aides to sit for depositions in the case, but Paxton appealed that ruling up to the Texas Supreme Court.

The lawsuit by four of Paxton’s top aides accused him of overstepping and abusing his power as the state's top attorney. Paxton did not contest liability or the allegations.

Their claims were the basis for Paxton’s impeachment by the Texas House last year. He was acquitted by the Senate after a trial in September.

Last week outgoing Sen. Drew Springer of Cooke County called on the Senate to explore a re-do of Paxton's impeachment trial. Springer is one of sixteen Senators who voted to acquit him.
