Hawkins elected officials resign citing health concerns

Both the mayor and mayor pro tem handed their resignations to council who accepted and immediately took a vote to fill in the vacant seat.

HAWKINS, Texas — The City of Hawkins is now under new leadership after the mayor and the second in command resigned from their positions on Tuesday evening.

A special city council meeting was called by the Mayor Susan Hubbard. On the agenda was choosing to accept both the resignation of her position and Mayor Pro Tem Clara Kay. Both items were approved unanimously by everyone in council except Hubbard who was not in attendance.

Council then held a vote on who should be temporary mayor pro tem until the next election in May. City council member Charles Richoz was nominated and successfully voted into the position.

Richoz said he understands why Hubbard is stepping down from the position and could not attend Tuesday's special city council meting.

"She has been very ill for a long time and she has breathing problems and is diagnosed with congestive heart failure, kidney failure and various things," Richoz said.

Richoz said Kay decided to step down because of stress and health issues as well.

"Well because of all of the issues I guess of the city," Richoz said. "And the stress that was causing her, in addition to her health concerns she just couldn't do it any longer."

A executive session was also held during the meeting to discuss disciplinary actions between council and the city secretary. A discussion was held and the item was tabled to be discussed at the next meeting on Jan 18.
