Proposition aims to bring alcohol sales to northern part of Gregg County

Gregg County Precinct 1 is the only dry precinct in the county, but that could soon change if Proposition A is passed.

GREGG COUNTY, Texas — Gregg County voters in Precinct 1 will be voting for or against the sale of alcohol in the area.

Tony Holyfield, co-owner of Lil Tommy's Gas & Go, started a petition with his brother to get this issue on the ballot. And by popular demand, Holyfield said residents in the area want alcohol.

"We get roughly anywhere from three to 10 people come in every day since we’ve been open looking to buy beer here," Holyfield said.

Gregg County Pct. 1 is the only dry precinct in the county, but that could soon change if Proposition A is passed on Tuesday.

"Liquor, beer, wine (will) all of that will be on the ballot," Holyfield said. "We’ve had a lot of people come in and tell us that they voted for it and it’s going to get passed and we’re really excited for it."

Pct. 1 has been dry since prohibition. That's almost 100 years of no alcohol.

"We can’t compete with Walmart, Brookshire’s and all these other deals," Holyfield said.

If Prop A passes, Holyfield hopes to open a steakhouse, pickleball court and concert venue in the precinct in the future. And if they get enough support, the family will be able to sell alcohol inside their convenience store and attract customers like Tyshawn Taylor -- one of many Gregg County residents who pass by Pct. 1, but can’t buy alcohol.

"I drink beer. I drink alcohol. I come here and no beer. What’s going on? We need beer," Taylor said.

Although Pct. 1 would become wet if voters approve the measure, the county itself would remain partially wet, as some areas have other alcohol sales restrictions.
