TYLER, Texas — Out of sight and out of mind has left Tyler's Gassaway Park to become a special treasure.
"It's kind of a little gem on the north side of town, really hidden neighborhood," Randy Garrett, owner of Garrett and Associates General Contractors, said.
Last summer, the city of Tyler announced that they would be revamping the park that sits at the bottom of a hill.
"It's an under served area," Marcia Garrett, owner of Garrett and Associates General Contractors, said.
While the city has its location as 2921 Martha St. there's a tree that blocks any one from entering. The actual entrance is at the end of Charlotte Drive about a mile from Loop 323 and U.S. Highway 69.
The Tyler City Council during a meeting Wednesday morning awarded a contract bid to Garrett and Associates General Contractors for work to the area, with Benjamin Romines as the project manager.
"A little bit of dirt work and mainly concrete work, curbs, sidewalks, little bit of parking," Randy Garrett said. "I think three or four area lights."
The contractors are also working on Woldert and Fun Forest Park for the city as well as having just finished up renovations at Texas College.
"We're very aware of how special that part of Tyler is and how much it needs to be loved better," Marcia Garrett explained.
The playground equipment has already been removed and trees have been planted where it used to sit. The equipment will be placed at the top of the hill once the other renovations are complete.
"By the middle of the summer, we should be finished and people can begin to enjoy the park," Randy Garrett said.
The city also has plans to renovate the restrooms in the future.
