Joan Morton wants closure for her daughter Sheila, last seen on June 2 in Angelina County. Fast forward three months and a lot of people are wondering whether a body found in the median along Highway 69 near Wells is Morton.
"We don't know if the person just laid down and died," Cherokee County Sheriff James Campbell said. "We don't know if they were hit by a car and then knocked in there. There again we just have to wait and see."
Investigators believe whoever it is had been laying there for a month. They know she was a white woman but the body was too far gone to immediately tell how she died. An autopsy along with DNA and dental testing should help
"If this is her then God has answered our prayers," Joan Morton said.
As tough as it is to imagine, Morton's mother has come to the point where death can be considered a blessing--instead of being whispered as the worst case scenario.
"I have been in a nightmare for 93 days," she said. "I have spent hours and hours, and thousands of people have spent hours on their knees."
Angelina county investigators said the search for Morton has left them empty handed and out of options. Meanwhile Morton's mom is closer to moving on.
"I know my daughter didn't do this herself," she said. "Someone done it and I hope that they will be found. They need to know that they need to get forgiveness from God."
Her hope is that evidence in this strip of grass can bring the answers that time could not.
