ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Hurricane Helene washed away many homes and everything inside it, leaving hundreds of families to rely on dwindling resources.
"I've seen people who are sick and just so many people that still don't have water and food," Jennifer Sanders, an Asheville resident, said.
Sanders opened the doors of her home for people displaced by Helene.
"Some of our friends have some respiratory issues just not feeling too comfortable being in those houses with mud around them," Sanders said. "They really need to be in a clean peaceful environment after what, they've gone through."
Sanders says her home in the Asheville area received minor damage. She said she considers herself one of the lucky ones and hopes to spread that luck and kindness by opening up her home free of charge.
"I have two bedrooms, my children are grown so they're sitting there ready and open," Sanders said.
Airbnb is also helping victims get free temporary housing. The organization has partnered with local nonprofits and 211 contact centers including in North Carolina and South Carolina.
Sanders said she hopes the extra help will bring some peace.
