Police said a thorough investigation led officers to issue warrants for Linda Bennett for accusations of damaging the cherished Rose Monument on July 19.

WILLS POINT, Texas — A woman was arrested Thursday for allegedly driving while intoxicated and crashing into the Rose Monument in Wills Point last week, causing significant damage.

Linda Bennett was charged with DWI, criminal mischief between $30,000 and $150,000 and marijuana possession and booked into the Van Zandt County Jail, according to the Van Zandt County Jail records and the Wills Point Police Department.

Police said a thorough investigation led officers to issue warrants for Bennett for accusations of damaging the cherished Rose Monument on July 19.

"The incident shocked the community, as the monument is a treasured symbol in the town's heart," Police Chief Aaron W. Long said.

He said the swift action, dedication and comprehensive work of the Wills Point officers led to resolving the case. Long added his department is committed to making sure justice is served.

"We appreciate the community's support during this time. The Rose Monument holds a special place in our hearts, and we are determined to see it restored to its former glory as soon as possible," Long said.

In a previous update, Mayor Mike D.  Jones said the monument was struck by a vehicle in the early morning hours of July 19. He said the city was presented with the Rose Monument in 1916 by the Rose brothers and the structure has welcomed visitors for over a century.
