Winterizing your water pipes

BRAZOS VALLEY, Texas -  The wicked winter weather can cause plumbing pipes to freeze and even burst.

BRAZOS VALLEY, Texas - The wicked winter weather can cause plumbing pipes to freeze and even burst.

With temperatures hitting the mid to low thirties, being informed and prepared this winter may help prevent the messy and expensive repairs associated with frozen water pipes.

Reed Holler, a local service technician at Ed Phillips Plumbing says that frozen and burst pipes are common among homeowners who are caught unaware by the cold weather, but keeping a constant water flow can prevent this from happening.

" If the water is moving, its harder to freeze, that one way of keeping your pipes safe

Local plumbers also suggest opening cabinets underneath water faucets in the home to keep warmth flowing to your pipes.

Shutting off your automatic sprinkler systems and using faucet covers can also prevent you from dealing with costly repairs associated with burst pipes.

Reed says to watch for temperatures below 32 degrees but to also keep the wind in mind because it causes freezing to occur at a higher velocity.
