Want to avoid mosquitoes? Experts explain how

Fowler shares there are certain places in your home and around your neighborhood that could have the highest number of mosquitoes.

TYLER, Texas — It’s summertime in Texas and that means heat and mosquitoes!

"I have to say I’m sadly not a fan. I have super sensitive skin. So every time I get bit, I just rapidly get a huge welt on my arm. So I don’t really enjoy it that much," Tyler resident Amanda Luxton said while on a walk at Rose Rudman Trail in Tyler.

People might have notice more mosquitoes around because of the excessive rain, but there are steps that can protect people and their property from these mosquitoes.

City of Tyler Animal and Mosquito Control Supervisor Mary Fowler said that a lid of a water bottle can hold over 100 mosquito larvae and recommends to spray mosquito repellent from dusk to dawn.

Fowler started working in April to pretreat more than 500 spots and creeks in Tyler. Fowler shares there are certain places in people's home and around neighborhoods that could have the highest number of mosquitoes. She has some tips to keep the insects away.

"The main stuff are the gutters, the French drains and toys outside. Cyclone fencing that has poles that don’t have tops on it, look down in there. Anything that looks like it holds water you want to check. " Fowler said.

Residents in the city of Tyler are urged to contact Tyler Animal Control at 903-535-0045 if they need help managing the mosquitoes on their property.

"That’s why we want the public to help us find where all these mosquitoes are coming from and to educate at your own house. We don’t do private property, but we will come out and investigate and say, 'hey this is where your problem is and this is what you can try,'" Fowler said.
