UT Tyler receives $25,000 from Texas Wounded Warrior Foundation to fund scholarships for veterans

The scholarship provides $2,000, disbursed evenly between the fall and spring semesters, to the veteran.

TYLER, Texas — UT Tyler received $25,000 on Wednesday from the Texas Wounded Warrior Foundation to award 12 student veterans the Richard and Madelyn Lewis Scholarship.

This scholarship is funded through the Texas Wounded Warrior Foundation and the members of the Eagles Bluff Golf Club to support UT Tyler student veterans. It provides $2,000, disbursed evenly between the fall and spring semesters.

It is awarded to honorably discharged veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. Active duty students (including Reservists and National Guard members) can apply, but they only be awarded the scholarship if other students are not eligible. Military family members cannot apply.

Junior and senior students at UT Tyler as well as veterans with an established disability rating from the Department of Veterans Affairs are given preference in the application.

"Especially those that aren’t using benefits or whose benefits have run out,  it actually helps them a lot more. They don't have some of those resources that our other students have and we try to discourage student veterans from taking loans as much as possible," said Coby Dillard, UT Tyler director for military and veteran services. "This is another tool, another resource that we have that helps them to not have to take these loans."
