UT Health East Texas adopts life-saving medical support program

The Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation program uses advanced technology to support patients whose hearts and lungs do not function properly on their own.

TYLER, Texas — UT Health East Texas announced the launch of a new life-saving medical support program for critically ill patients.

The Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation program uses advanced technology to support patients whose hearts and lungs do not function properly on their own. ECMO allows these organs to rest and heal by temporarily taking over the functions of these two organs.

UT Health East Texas is the first hospital in the region to adopt the ECMO treatment. Previously, patients seeking ECMO treatment had to be transferred to Houston or Dallas.

“This treatment allows patients to receive the highest level of cardiac and pulmonary supportive care locally, rather than being transferred to a facility far from home to receive this cutting-edge therapy,” Dr. Michael Lamanteer, UT Health East Texas chief medical officer, said.

The ECMO program at UT Health East Texas is staffed by physicians, nurses and perfusionists trained in the use of ECMO technology.

“ECMO is a game-changer for patients facing life-threatening conditions,” Dr. Lamanteer said. “Our team is dedicated to delivering expert care and ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients.”
