Sheriff Webb says he is asking TxDot for money to help educate residents about driving while intoxicated
Also, he will use the funds to pay deputies overtime pay. deputies will target distracted and intoxicated drivers.
“We will have deputies targeting people who are suspected of distracted driving and being under the influence,” Sheriff Webb said. “This will improve road safety.”
Webb says he got this idea after the death of two harmony teens last may. both teens died after a drunk driver struck their vehicle.
That driver has since plead guilty and is serving prison time. one resident tells us he supports the sheriff's proposal.
Residents tell me they agree with his proposed grant.
“I see distracted drivers every time I ride my bike,” Upshur County resident Joseph Curtis said. “We need to teach drivers to put the phones down and look at where they’re going.”
If TxDot approves the grant, Upshur County Sheriff Department will receive up to $39,000. The funds will be added to the 2018 budget.
