OVERTON, Texas — The logo is all over the town square, local buisness and the water tower.
Overton can't seem to get enough of Mustang football.
“As an opposing coach at other schools, seeing them play always felt that the the community was very supportive of the program,” Head coach Scotty Laymance said. “Success makes that a little easier and but I'm very appreciative.”
Even death couldn’t do some fans part, as the stadium sits next to the town cemetery, providing a direct view of the field.
But that’s how it’s always been, the entire city saddling up for the Mustangs.
“Overton has a history of success in in football, and it's been a little bit of time, but that that support has never waned," Laymence said. "Especially on home games, obviously a little easier to get here. But when we're on the road, they travel really well, and they're, they're very loud. You know, a lot of time during games, our guys on the field can't hear adjustments before a play, during a play, because of how loud our stands are and how loud our band is.”
Now, Overton is giving the city something to watch, a winning team with a passing attack few have been able to stop, including their round three opponent the Grapeland Sandies.
Overton has already beat the Sandies once this year, but that isn’t stopping Laymance from recognizing the threat ahead.
“Our guys know that we're going to have to, we're going to have to, we're going to have to play better than we did last time. They've made some improvements, some changes to their team that have, that have improved them, and, you know, we've gotten better too," Laymance said.
The Mustangs are on a good run, but one more win would really start solidifying those visions of a state championship. And in those visions will be the fans right there with them.
