Tyler woman gets probation for killing 30-year-old woman in 2022 pedestrian crash

Chatiryn Akerra Butler, 20, pleaded guilty on Jan. 8 to an accident involving death charge in connection with the Feb. 19, 2022 wreck that killed Kelsey Hise.

TYLER, Texas — A Tyler woman was sentenced to six years' probation for striking and killing a pedestrian while driving in February 2022 on North Broadway Ave. in Tyler.

Chatiryn Akerra Butler, 20, pleaded guilty on Jan. 8 to an accident involving death charge in connection with the Feb. 19, 2022 wreck that killed Kelsey Hise, 30, of Tyler, according to judicial records.

Records show Butler was sentenced to six years' probation and 240 hours of community service on Thursday during a sentencing hearing in the 7th District Court.

On Feb. 19, 2022, Hise was found lying in the roadway with major injuries in the 1200 block of North Broadway Ave. Hise later died at a hospital.

An arrest affidavit said Butler told multiple co-workers and customers that she believed she struck and killed Hise while driving her vehicle that night.

One of her co-workers told Butler that Hise died in the hit-and-run, and the employee said Butler responded by saying "she thought it was a man that she had hit, and she didn't know they had died," according to the affidavit.

A co-worker said Butler's demeanor seemed to show she wasn't "distraught" or "remorseful." Butler disregarded a suggestion that she should report the crash to police, the affidavit read. Another employee said Butler was "stressed and devastated" about hitting someone.
