TYLER, Texas — The Tyler City Council approved a project contract for sewer main improvement seeking to prevent leakage.
Payton Weidman, a spokesperson for the city of Tyler, said the council approved a capital improvements project contract for the Greenbriar Force Main Sliplining Project with Insituform Technologies, LLC on Wednesday. The contract cost $5,941,570.
The Greenbriar force main, located on Spur 164 north of Lindsey Park, is the drainage basin for more than 4,4000 acres and pumps around 2.2 million gallons of sewer a day.
"The pipe has reached the end of its useful life and has been an issue in the collection system, with a record number of leaks occurring over the past 10 months," a press release from the city of Tyler said.
As part of the project, fusible PVC pipe will be pulled through through the existing pipe to convey the sewer flow, in a process known as "sliplining." This method was chosen out of concern for the condition of the existing sewer pipe.
"There are nine lift stations that send sewage flow to the Greenbriar Lift Station, so we are unable to shut it down," said utilities director Kate Dietz, PE. "That's why the cost of this project is so high. The lift station has to continue pumping while the repairs are being made to the force main."
