Petal Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center evacuated after fire

Tyler Fire Marshal Paul Findley said there are two fire department units on the scene, and more information will be available soon.

TYLER, Texas — Residents and workers were evacuated from a Tyler nursing home following a fire Thursday afternoon.

Tyler Fire Department crews responded to the Petal Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, located in the 900 block of Baxter Avenue in Tyler, around 3:30 p.m.

According to the Tyler Fire Marshal Paul Findley, smoke was visible in the structure and employees evacuated the building. Nursing staff told the crews that the fire was extinguished with a portable fire extinguisher.

The fire started in a patient room and involved the window curtains. Firefighters made sure the fire was contained and ventilated the smoke from the building.

Findley said no one needed to be transported to the hospital. Units left the scene after about an hour. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Tyler Fire Marshal’s Office.
