Tyler martial arts studio masters the art of leadership skills

The martial arts academy is emphasizing skills such as discipline, self respect, honesty and belief through their program.

TYLER, Texas — Providing a safe space for kids to express themselves is crucial.

At Songahm Martial Arts Academy, they're not only emphasizing leadership skills, but also building valuable skills for the future.

"We focus on building young people through life skills, emphasizing discipline, self respect, honest and belief," Songahm Martial Arts Academy owner Dr. Dometrius Hill said.

It's not just the kids who are participating; parents like Robert Brown also get to practice alongside their children.

"It's very fun and rewarding to train with your kids while progressing yourself at the same time," Brown said.

Brown, with three kids at the academy, emphasizes that beyond fun, he hopes they take away discipline and moral values.

"I tell them taekwondo is a lifestyle; you can't rush through it. You've got to take your time," Brown said.

Jay Foote, a student at the academy stood out for displaying strength and leadership. He has big goals for his taekwondo family and sees the academy as a safe space.

"I really love all the students here. This is a place where I can safely teach them, and it's not crowded. It's a safe space to cry and talk to somebody," Foote said.

Hill's passion for martial arts started over three decades ago in Cuba, where his parents sought an outlet for his aggression.

He emphasizes non-physical approaches, especially in bullying prevention, teaching kids to walk away and diffuse situations.

"A fight consists of two battles, and you lose the first one if you have to fight. So, try to walk away, try to diffuse the situation, use words instead of fists," Hill said.
