DOCUMENTS: Tyler man shot, killed his ex-girlfriend's friend during birthday celebration

Kelly Torrez's friend told investigators she was celebrating Torrez's birthday when Melvin Guevera, who is her ex-boyfriend, shot Torrez multiple times.

SMITH COUNTY, Texas — Documents say a Tyler man killed his ex-girlfriend's friend Sunday evening while celebrating the friend's birthday.

Kelly Eduardo Torrez, 22, of Tyler, was pronounced dead at a local hospital after a shooting at a residence on County Road 4136 in Smith County around 6:30 p.m. Melvin Orlando Guevara, Jr., 21, was later arrested and charged with murder in connection with Torrez's death. Torrez was found shot multiple times when deputies arrived at the scene.

According to an arrest affidavit, Torrez's sister said she saw a man, who she did not know, entered the home with a pistol. The man, who was later identified as Guevara, went into Torrez's room and just before she heard several gunshots. She said Guevara walked back out of the house and left.

Torrez's friend told investigators she was celebrating Torrez's birthday with his family when Guevera, who is her ex-boyfriend, shot Torrez multiple times and then walked out of the home. He ultimately died from his injuries at a hospital.

Deputies were alerted of the identity of the suspect and description of his vehicle.  The vehicle was located at a car way in the area of Hwy. 31 E. and Loop 323. Guevara was pulled over and taken into custody. He was booked into the Smith County Jail on $500,000 bond.

Torrez's sister has made a GoFundMe to alleviate financial stress. Those who cannot donate are asked to keep the family in their prayers. Torrez was the youngest of four children and he died on his birthday, the fundraiser states. To donate, click here
