Tyler ISD to provide free breakfast to all students, lunches for elementary schools

Tyler ISD Food Service Director Victor Olivares said helping students get free meals is crucial to them having the fuel to make it to the end of the school day.

TYLER, Texas — With the cost of food rising, one East Texas school district is wanting to help parents with breakfast and lunch.

This year, Tyler ISD will provide free lunches to all elementary school kids. Free breakfast will also be provided to all students kindergarten through 12th grade.

Tyler ISD Food Service Director Victor Olivares said helping students get free meals is crucial to them having the fuel to make it to the end of the school day.

“Providing meals for kids, of course, we know it's an important thing for the learning process,” Olivares said.  “We hope people participate in order to get the jump start they need and get into the classrooms, and hopefully will have energy to get through their day.”

Those who have a student who is in middle or high school will need to fill out a lunch application to qualify for the free or reduced lunches.

Olivares said last year the district was able to serve roughly 11,000 to 12,000 lunches per day.

And within the past two days they were able to provide over 5,000 breakfast  meals and over 10,000 lunches.
