TYLER, Texas — Tyler ISD Chief of Police Danny Brown announced his resignation Tuesday after 12 years with the school district.
The resignation comes after the Smith County Commissioners Court appointed Brown to serve as the Smith County justice of the peace for Precinct 5.
“We are deeply grateful for Chief Brown’s service and dedication to Tyler ISD,” Tyler ISD Superintendent Dr. Marty Crawford said. “We are proud to see him continue serving the public in this new capacity. Chief Brown has done an admirable job as Tyler ISD’s Chief of Police for the last nine years. Most recently, he has modernized our police force, which is an immense task, considering Tyler ISD deploys the third largest law enforcement agency in Smith County and one of the top 20 or so largest law-enforcement agencies in East Texas.”
Deputy Chief of Police Destry Walsworth will step in as acting chief of police in Brown's absence while the district searches for their next chief. Walsworth has worked in Tyler Police for over 30 years across several roles.
"We have full confidence in Deputy Chief Walsworth’s ability to lead during this transition," Crawford said. "We look forward to the continued evolvement of protecting and securing our schools that our police, together with our safety and security department, have worked to structure for our students, staff, and families."
