TYLER, Texas — Tyler ISD's Dixie Elementary is mourning the loss of two beloved students who were killed in crashes one month apart.
On Thursday, Jan. 4, Kylie Medeiros, 9, was involved in a crash on SH 64.
According to an arrest affidavit, a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper determined Krystle Medeiros, Kylie's mother, was driving an SUV on the wrong side of the road on SH 64 when she struck a pickup head-on. Both Krystle and Kylie Medeiros were taken to the hospital. Kylie died frim her injuries the following day. Officials say Krystle, was drunk with a blood alcohol level of .35 when she caused the wreck.
On Sunday, Feb. 4, Laiyah Mitchell, 7, was also in a vehicle that crashed on SH 64 W.
The preliminary investigation revealed around 7:15 p.m., a car, driven by Sharya Snow, 18, of Tyler, was traveling on SH 64 W. in the westbound turn lane. At the same time, a pickup, driven by Nathaniel Jimenez, 25, also of Tyler, was traveling eastbound. DPS says Snow failed to yield the right-of-way and turned left into the path of the truck.
Snow and a passenger, identified as Shaud Dewberry, 12, of Tyler, were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene. Jimenez was also hospitalized for non-life threatening injuries.
