Tyler ISD celebrates its LINK 18+ program students, graduates

The LINK 18+ Program gives students with special needs gain vocational and independent living skills by interning at local businesses.

TYLER, Texas — Tyler ISD recognized the accomplishments of nine students in the Learning Independence and New Knowledge program, including three who graduated, on Wednesday.

The LINK 18+ Program gives students with special needs gain vocational and independent living skills by interning at local businesses. More than 50 local businesses have signed up to participate in the program. Tyler ISD partners with Tyler Junior College for the program.

The graduating interns for this ceremony includes Julianna Wetmore, Timmothy McInroe and Jacob Montgomery.

Experience gained in these internships helps these students be successful in the workplace.

"It gives them the feeling of respect, being respected and honored," said Melissa Reynolds, LINK program teacher. "It gives them the sense of ownership, teaching them not to be dependent on somebody else and not having others enable them. But show them that you are capable, and you have those smarts and we are going to help you figure out which smarts work the best for you as a young adult."

According to Tyler ISD, some graduates will join their family businesses and others will attend the East Texas Center for Independent Living to learn skills and socialization.

"At Tyler ISD, we are immensely proud of the accomplishments of our students in the LINK 18+ Program,” Tyler ISD Superintendent Dr. Marty Crawford said. “Today's ceremony marks not only a celebration of academic achievement but also a testament to the power of community partnerships. Together, we are providing our students with the tools they need to thrive independently and contribute meaningfully to our community."

The LINK Class of 2024 is the 14th class to participate in the LINK 18+ Program at TJC West.

Sherrie Warren, who served 30 years at Tyler ISD, was also honored for her retirement as a job coach with the LINK Program.
