Tyler community figure Dr. Aubrey Sharpe passes away at 78

Aubrey played major roles at Tyler Junior College, Tyler Chamber & Economic Development committees and other local nonprofit boards.

TYLER, Texas — Family and loved ones of a major community figure and friend to many in Tyler are mourning after the loss of Dr. Aubrey D. Sharpe.

Sharpe passed away Monday after 78 years of life filled with friendship and counsel.

In a statement from the Sharpe family, his nephew Michael Sharpe said Aubrey was a truly exceptional man of faith, champion in the community, and the “Man About Town."

Aubrey played major roles at Tyler Junior College, Tyler Chamber & Economic Development committees and other local nonprofit boards.

"His family will miss him terribly, but take great comfort knowing that he is in Heaven saying 'Oh Happy Day.'"  The family would like to express their sincere thank you to everyone for their thoughts and prayers."

Michael Sharpe encouraged people to strive to be a servant leader and help others when given the chance like his uncle did.

He added that the Sharpe family is looking forward to celebrating Aubrey's life at his funeral service this weekend.

The service will be held Friday and Saturday at the Stewart Family Funeral Home in Tyler. Visitation will happen Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., while the service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday.

In a statement released Tuesday, the United Way of Smith County said the group was saddened to share that Aubrey, the nonprofit's development officer and dear friend, recently died.

The United Way said Aubrey made a big impact on the community and the organization. He served as the board president in 1998 and served on nearly sub-committee during his years of service. He had recently joined the development team and opened doors that few leaders in Tyler could.

"His presence around the office would always light up the room, and he will be deeply missed by all of us," the United Way said. "Well done, Aubrey. Your legacy in our community will live on, and we are forever grateful for your many years of service."
