Tyler City Council approves zoning change seeking to change Hollywood Theaters into office, clinic space

No information has been released on when the movie theater would close down.

TYLER, Texas — The Tyler City Council on Wednesday approved a zoning change that would seek to change the Hollywood Theaters building into office and clinic space.

City of Tyler Planning Director Kyle Kingma said during the city council meeting the plan is for Bethesda Health Clinic to renovate the inside of the Regal Tyler Rose theater, located at 1250 S SW Loop 323 SW, into offices and clinic space.

There are no plans for adding more square footage to the building, Kingma said. He added there was no opposition from residents regarding the zone change.

"I don’t have specifics other than the general usage. The industrial zoning did not allow for the medical office and clinic uses but now that it is rezoned the new owner will be able to proceed with planning knowing the uses are allowed," Kingma said.

Councilmembers approved changing the area from a light industrial district to a general commercial district. It's unknown when the next steps in the transition from Regal to Bethesda will begin.

After the zoning change, Bethesda would need to submit permits and design plans, city of Tyler spokesperson Payton Weidman said.

No information has been released on when the movie theater would close down. Currently, the Regal website lists movie showtimes as far into the future as Jan. 2 at the Regal Tyler Rose location.

Mayor Don Warren thanked Bethesda CEO Dr. John English for all that he and the nonprofit does for the community. Bethesda is a nonprofit clinic known for treating patients within underserved and underinsured communities.

CBS19 has reached out to both Regal, the parent company of the Tyler theater, and Bethesda Health Clinic. We are currently awaiting comment.
