Tyler City Council approves construction contract to begin water treatment plant upgrades

The original plant was built in 1955 and is in need of rehabilitation.

TYLER, Texas — The Tyler City Council approved a construction contract Wednesday with Gracon Construction Inc. to begin the Southside Wastewater Treatment Plant Aeration Basin and Final Clarifier Improvements Project.

The project was announced in Mar. 2023 after the city acquired the engineering services of KSA Engineers, Inc. to design the renovations. The engineers created a plan to overhaul the most outdated parts of the 69-year-old treatment plant that is now set in motion after the approval of the most recent construction contract.

Ground is estimated to be broken in October and should be completed in Oct. 2026.

The current facility was built in 1955, and plays a vital role in providing clean water to Tyler and the surrounding area.

The deal with Gracon is worth over $14 million and is funded through utility bonds. Gracon is a construction company based out of Mesquite that specializes in water and wastewater treatment fields in the Dallas area.
