DAY 2: Trial continues for man accused of killing East Texas deputy during 2019 traffic stop

Gregory Newson, of Shreveport, Louisiana, is charged with capital murder in the shooting death of 28-year-old Panola County Deputy Chris Dickerson.

LONGVIEW, Texas — The trial for a Louisiana man accused of killing an East Texas deputy in 2019 continued into its second day on Thursday.

Gregory Newson, of Shreveport, Louisiana, is charged with capital murder in the shooting death of 28-year-old Panola County Deputy Chris Dickerson during a Dec. 31, 2019 traffic stop. On Wednesday, Newson pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The trial is being held at the Gregg County Courthouse after Presiding Judge Christi Kennedy found that an impartial and fair trial could not be held in Panola County.

LIVE UPDATES:

An officer testified about the Yukon that Newson was driving in the early morning hours of Dec. 31, 2019 in Shreveport after the shooting. Officers reviewed the car itself and evidence found inside of it as part of the investigation.

Suspected blood was found on the center console of the vehicle. Blood stains and bullet holes were also seen in the vehicle. A bag of suspected marijuana was found at the site where the Yukon crashed.

Dr. Salman Rahim, who was working as a resident at a Shreveport hospital in December 2019, testified that he was a part of the team that treated Newson after the rollover wreck involving the Yukon.

Rahim testified there were puncture wounds on Newson's legs that appeared to be gunshot wounds. Newson also had a dog bite injury that Rahim considered a minor wound. Newson's abdomen was sensitive as well.

Rahim said that Newson would've been able to run after the injuries that he was observed to have. Newson also tested positive having the byproducts of marijuana in his system. Newson told physicians about the car chase with police that ended in the rollover crash.

The jury is shown photos of Newson in the hospital and Rahim describes the injuries and their severity. He identified dog bites and bullet wounds found on Newson's body.  Newson had a total of six gunshot wounds - all of which were on his legs.

The doctor who performed the autopsy on Dickerson testified about the gunshot entry and exit wounds found on Dickerson's body. Photos of the autopsy were shown to the jurors. He testified how one bullet for instance caused multiple injuries.

In the autopsy, the doctor labeled four gunshot wounds on Dickerson's body. The doctor said he would not expect someone to survive the wounds Dickerson suffered.

A person who was shot in the way that Dickerson was would die within seconds to minutes, and they would need immediate medical treatment, the doctor said.
