UPDATE: 2 dead following crash on FM 2661 in Smith County

DPS initially closed a portion of FM 2661, but it has since reopened.

SMITH COUNTY, Texas — Two people are dead following a Thursday morning crash in Smith County..

Around 6:20 a.m., troopers responded to a two-vehicle fatal crash on Farm-to-Market Road 2661, just west of Noonday.

The investigator's preliminary report indicates that the driver of a 2002 Nissan Frontier, identified as Martin Landaverde, 53, of Ben Wheeler, was traveling south on FM 2661 while the driver of a 1999 Ford F-150, identified as Angela Hopkins, 35, also of Ben Wheeler, was traveling north on the same roadway. 

For an unknown reason, the driver of the Ford crossed over the center stripe and stuck the Nissan in the southbound lane.

 Landaverde was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to a Tyler funeral home. 

Bryan was taken to a Tyler hospital where she later died.

DPS initially closed a portion of FM 2661, but it has since reopened.

The crash remains under investigation.
