TYLER — Tyler Junior College head football coach Danny Palmer is stepping down after 44 years in the coaching business.
The announcement came during a press conference on Tuesday, in which Palmer said he would stay on in the athletic department in another capacity.
In high school, Palmer played quarterback for three years under Johnny Stidger at John Tyler, becoming a three-sport letterman. He was named to the All-State baseball team in 1967 thanks to his skills and the coaching of the late Dr. Billy Jack Doggett.
Upon graduating high school, Palmer started two years at quarterback for the University of Southern Mississippi.
He would go on to receive a B.A. from the University of Mississippi and an M.Ed. from Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
Palmer joined the TJC staff in January 2007.
He received a B.A. from the University of Mississippi and an M.Ed. from Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
In 1975, he was named the "Youngest 5A Head Coach" when he took over at Texas High in Texarkana at the age of 26.
He was named Coach of the Year by the Waco-Tribune Herald while at Waco Richfield in 1977.
Palmer would go on to serve 17 years as a high school head football coach before spending an additional 17 years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, eight of which were spent at the University of Houston.
While at UH, he recruited Joffrey Reynolds from Tyler Lee, as well as Drew Lowry, Rex Hadnot and Leonta Rheams.
He was nominated for the Frank Broyles College Assistant Football Coach of the Year in 1997.
Palmer took over the reins at TJC in January 2007.
TJC says they wil begin the search for a new head coach later this week.
