VAN ZANDT COUNTY, Texas — It's been an ongoing issue since 2020 and it's happening again.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is alerting drivers along I-20 of tire deflation devices, known as caltrops, being scattered along the highway.
According to TxDOT, the most recent discovery of 12 caltrops occurred on May 6 on I-20 W. at mile marker 533 and I-20 E. at mile markers 518, 520, 528 and 529.
"Caltrops are four-pronged, heavy gauge steel puncturing spikes that can be thrown or linked together to cause immediate, irreparable, catastrophic failure of pneumatic tires," according to the U.S. Dept. of Defense. "These devices significantly impede wheeled vehicle progression at access control points and checkpoints."
If you have any information on these incidents, please contact Lt. Bob Keltner with the Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office at (469) 576-1274 or Andrew Fagile with the Texas Department of Public Safety at (903) 567-2011 ext. 10914.
