On the road for Thanksgiving? Here's some tips to stay safe on Texas highways

As highways become more crowded, safety and preparation are essential to ensure everyone reaches their destinations without unnecessary headaches.

SAN ANTONIO — Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel times of the year, with millions of Texans hitting the road to spend the holiday with loved ones. As highways become more crowded, safety and preparation are essential to ensure everyone reaches their destinations without unnecessary headaches.

Plan Ahead to Avoid Congestion

According to AAA Texas, the key to a smooth Thanksgiving journey is timing. Travel experts recommend leaving early in the morning on Thanksgiving Day or late at night to bypass heavy afternoon congestion.

"After the holiday, Sunday is expected to be a particularly busy travel day," said Doug Shupe, AAA Texas Spokesperson. "If you can, wait until Monday afternoon to avoid the rush, or consider traveling home on Saturday afternoon."

Prepare for the Unexpected

AAA also urges drivers to be ready for roadside emergencies. The organization anticipates rescuing more than 29,000 stranded drivers this Thanksgiving due to dead batteries, flat tires, and lockouts.

"A little preventative maintenance can go a long way," Shupe advised. "Check your tire tread and inflation, ensure your battery is fully charged, and top off all fluid levels before hitting the road."

AAA recommends packing an emergency kit that includes:

  • A flashlight
  • Water and snacks
  • A phone charger
  • Jumper cables

 Stay Safe Behind the Wheel

"Don’t drive intoxicated and remember that using your smartphone behind the wheel can be just as dangerous as drinking and driving," Shupe said.

To further ensure safety, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has launched Operation CARE (Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort). Troopers will be out in force, focusing on speeding, distracted driving, and seat belt violations.

Final Reminders for a Safe Journey

Whether you’re traveling a few miles across town or hundreds of miles across the state, planning ahead is the best way to ensure a safe and stress-free trip. Leave early, stay alert, and don’t forget to take breaks during long drives.
