FAA reveals cause of Victoria plane crash

The plane split in half at the fuselage and struck three cars in the crash.

VICTORIA, Texas — A twin-engine propeller plane that crashed onto a road in Victoria on Wednesday afternoon had run out of fuel, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA released its initial findings into the cause of the crash that left four people with injuries. Three people had non-life-threatening injuries and one person was taken to a hospital out of town for additional medical treatment. The extent of their injuries remained unknown as of Thursday afternoon.

Victoria police said the intersection of Zac Lentz Parkway and Mockingbird Lane was reopened after the crash.

According to Victoria police, three vehicles were damaged in the emergency landing. Images from the scene showed the plane split in half at the fuselage, and part of the plane wreckage sitting on top of a damaged car.

“This is not something we see every day, but we are glad that people seem to be OK and they’re getting checked out,” Victoria Police Deputy Chief Eline Moya said.

Witnesses sprung into action when they saw what was happening.

"I thought the plane was going to hit me," said Tony Poynor. "I saw the shadow of the overpass."

Poynor said he rushed to help the pilot and a woman in a car.

A video posted online showed the plane flying very low over the roadway shortly before the crash around 3 p.m. about 150 miles south of Houston.
