Texas Shakespeare Festival returns to Kilgore for annual summer shows

This year's lineup includes William Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" and "Julius Caesar" as well as "Sweeney Todd" and "Peter and the Starcatcher."

KILGORE, Texas — The longstanding Texas Shakespeare Festival is returning this summer to Kilgore in late June.

This year's festival will be held at Kilgore College and the Texan Theatre with opening night on June 27. The lineup includes William Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" and "Julius Caesar" as well as "Sweeney Todd" and "Peter and the Starcatcher." There will be a downtown series that includes a staged reading of "Jane Eyre" and a talent showcase.

Tickets for guild members will go on sale May 1, and tickets for the general public will be available on May 8.

The Texas Shakespeare Festival seeks to give attendees a high-caliber theatrical experience and introduce people to the power of Shakespeare’s plays and the magic of live theatre. The festival hosted its inaugural season in June 1986 with performances of Shakespeare’s "Twelfth Night," "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" and "The Daisy Bradford 3" by Gifford Wingate.

"We have a really, really diverse season of incredible comedies, there's something for everyone here, there are slapstick comedies, there are terrifying horror stories this year, too. There's political drama. And there's also a prequel to to Peter Pan," actor Danny Crowe said.
