Texas A&M University-Commerce seeks to change its name

In the letter, Rudin noted the choice to change will broaden the school's regional, national and international identity and reconnect the institution to its roots.

COMMERCE, Texas — Texas A&M University-Commerce could soon have a name that seeks to reflect East Texas pending approval from the TAMU Board of Regents.

Mark Rudin, president of Texas A&M University-Commerce, said in a letter to the university's staff and faculty that he is formally requesting that the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents consider changing the university's name to East Texas A&M University.

"In order to sustain the positive momentum we have achieved in recent years, we must strengthen our university’s identity. To do so, we must increase our visibility and reinforce our mission to serve the rural and urban educational needs of our region," Rudin said.

In the letter, Rudin noted that East Texas was in the name of the university until 1996, and the choice to change will broaden the school's regional, national and international identity and reconnect the institution to its historical roots. He added that university staff continues to students, faculty, staff, alumni and Lion supporters who have suggested names for consideration.

The steps for a name change include: Rudin writing a letter to Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp to have the issue placed on the Nov. 6 to 8 agenda and submitting a request for financial support from the Texas A&M University System for costs associated with the name change.

If it is placed on the agenda, regents will vote on the proposal on Nov. 7. The change will take effect immediately, but the university will request a six- to eight-month grace period for a smooth transition and branding purposes.
