Texas African American Museum hosts Juneteenth celebration

The museum also honored Black community members like Executive Director Gloria Washington with Juneteenth Humanitarian awards for their contributions to East Texas

TYLER, Texas — The Texas African American Museum in Tyler celebrated Juneteenth on Wednesday with a big celebration.

The event included free food, drinks, a live DJ and games for all in attendance.

"The fight still continues, but we give thanks, and we celebrate with the red punch, fried foods, and great African culture, to illustrate to other nations that we still fight for freedom. We still fight for our own," resident Hassan Daniels said.

Tyler City Councilwoman District 2 Elect Petra Hawkins said it was a beautiful sight to see the community come together for this national holiday.

The Texas African American Museum also honored Black community members like Executive Director Gloria Washington with Juneteenth Humanitarian awards for their contributions to the area.

"June 19 by Gordon Granger. General Gordon Granger, in Galveston Texas, freeing all blacks in Texas and all over the United States, that was a great day and we shouldn’t ever forget it," Mandel Stoker said.
