Suspect in 2016 death of Ron Horaney gets over 3 years in prison for federal drug conviction

Documents say in a 2024 interview, Rene Paul Garcia Jr. told police that his half-brother Alfredo Lizcano admitted to killing Ron Horaney.

LONGVIEW, Texas — Editor's Note: The above video aired on April 30, 2024.

One of the three men named a suspect in the 2016 murder of Longview businessman Ron Horaney was recently sentenced to over three years in federal prison for unrelated drug charges.

Rene Paul Garcia Jr., 26, pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine with intent to distribute in a federal court out of Dallas. On Sept. 11, he was sentenced to 41 months in prison. After he serves his time, Garcia will be on supervised release for three years.

Garcia, 26, Alfredo Lizcano, 38, and Reza Kamali, 87, were named suspects earlier this year in connection with Horaney's death.

Officials say Lizcano killed Horaney after he was hired by  Kamali to murder Horaney. Arrests documents say Kamali made the hire because of a family dispute. Garcia is Lizacano's half-brother, and he was named a suspect at the end of April this year after Kamali and Lizcano's arrests.

Lizcano and Kamali are both charged with capital murder and have pleaded not guilty. Kamali will have a court appearance on Friday morning.

Garcia has not yet been indicted in Gregg County for the Horaney case.

Horaney, who was 54 when he was killed, was gunned down in the doorway of his home on Tryon Road., on Monday, May 30, 2016.

The arrest warrant states Kamali offered to pay a large sum of money for this person to murder Horaney. Later that same month, investigators saw Kamali meet with a man, who was later identified as Lizcano, at a Dallas fast food restaurant while performing surveillance on Kamali.

Investigators followed Lizcano's vehicle and he was stopped for a traffic violation. During that stop, Lizcano was identified as the person who met with Kamali. Garcia was in the front passenger seat, the affidavit said.

On April 18, 2024, Garcia met with investigators to discuss what he knew about Lizcano's role in Horaney's murder. When shown a photo lineup that included a photo of Kamali,  Garcia said, "that's the man that hired my brother," according to the document.

Lizcano told Garcia that he was going to do a job and murder someone. Lizcano sent Garica to pick up a box that the Garcia believed to be a payment for the murder, according to an interview detailed in the affidavit.

On the day of the murder, Lizcano admitted to Garcia that he killed Horaney. Garcia said he did a Google search of the murder when it happened, and a forensic examination of his phone showed that to be true, the affidavit explained.
