TYLER, Texas — Crews are responding to a structure fire near Rose Stadium in Tyler.

According to the Tyler Police Dept., the fire broke out in the 400 block of S. Peach Ave. around 7 a.m.

Fire Marshal Paul Findley was first to arrive on the scene.

According to the City of Tyler, Findley was driving to work for a meeting when he heard what sounded like an explosion, saw a black cloud of smoke and went to investigate.

When he arrived on scene, he met with a woman who lives at the house and had woken up after hearing a loud noise.

"Findley went inside the house to alert three other adults and two children to make their way out as smoke began filling the house," the city said.

Officials say the fire originated from a space heater in a carport/storage room and spread into the attic. Shortly after, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire limiting the damage to the house.

"One positive is that the smoke detectors did start working as smoke began filling up the house," said Findley. "If this had happened at 2 a.m. those smoke detectors could have saved this family's lives."
