DALLAS — Dallas police have released the affidavit for the suspect accused of shooting three people Saturday night in a food court at the State Fair of Texas.
The suspect, 22-year-old Cameron Alexander Turner, has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault -serious bodily injury, one charge for each victim, a second-degree felony.
Police write in the affidavit that the arresting officer was called at about 7:42 p.m. to an officer assist call regarding an active shooter at the fair.
Comments described the suspect as wearing an orange hoodie and shooting in the food court, the affidavit states.
Upon arrival, the arresting officer wrote that he was told three people had been shot and were taken to Baylor Hospital and that Turner was in custody.
Two confirmed witnesses told police they saw Turner shoot inside the food court, the affidavit details. One of the witnesses said he saw Turner shoot about three to four times, and the other witness said he saw Turner shooting and then another man fall to the ground before Turner fled the scene.
When Turner fled the scene, the affidavit states he was taken into custody by two state troopers who were working the fair, as well as a Dallas police officer. A handgun was also reportedly taken off of Turner.
The affidavit details statements Turner made to police, including reportedly telling police he was trying to protect his family when he was approached by "a group of big males" and that he went into "defense mode" and shot. Turner told police he shot three to four times.
Video footage of the incident reportedly shows Turner buy a water bottle from a concession stand in the food court while by himself without his family next to him, the affidavit details. Men can reportedly be seen approaching Turner from a distance.
When Turner turns around to leave the stand, one of the victims, Cade Kelly, can reportedly be seen approaching him, the affidavit states. Both men stop walking and appear to exchange words. Kelly reportedly had nothing in his hands and didn't reach for anything. Turner then reached for a handgun and began shooting at Kelly.
The affidavit states two additional people were shot as well, Stephen Wright and Andrea Silva. Wright and Silva told police they didn't see who shot them.
When taken back to police headquarters, the report states that Turner again told police he went into "survival mode" and felt threatened by Kelly, so he shot him.
Jeff Cotner, the director of security for the fair says they still don’t know how Turner got that gun onto the fairgrounds.
“I’m little emotional, I'm sorry,” he told WFAA. “It was very traumatic on Saturday night.”
He says in the time since the shooting they’ve made some subtle changes – like new fences at the main entrance and increased security.
“We moved like 2 extra officers from one spot to another spot and we moved to police stand about 30 feet,” Cotner said.
According to fair officials, they are still allowing people to enter the fairgrounds with guns, as long as they have a concealed carry permit – something some fairgoers question.
“How did he get his gun in? Maybe someone brought it in for him,” said fairgoer Denise Jackson.
Those going through security Monday say the checks were thorough.
“I felt good, they looked at my purse and they have the wands,” said Franziska Chunley.
