Smith County unveils trailer to house pets during disasters, emergencies

With the trailer, pets can have a shelter no matter when or where the disaster occurs.

TYLER, Texas — Smith County leaders unveiled its new pet disaster relief trailer that will help protect pets when an emergency happens locally.

On Wednesday, officials celebrated the trailer that was donated from the American Kennel Club.

“This trailer will allow us to care for and shelter pets during times of disasters,” Smith County Emergency Management Coordinator Brandon Moore said.

When people are escaping their homes from a disaster or emergency, they won't leave their homes if their pets can't come with them. With the trailer, pets can have a shelter no matter when or where the disaster occurs.

“The trailer came fully stocked and is ready to be immediately deployed thanks to our donors and the American Kennel Club,” Moore said. “We are very grateful to our community partners who donated funds to make this happen, and to the American Kennel Club. Smith County is ‘Striving for Excellence,’ and one way we are doing that is by taking care of our citizens during disasters, including the ones with four legs. We still have a lot of work to do, but this is a very important step.”

Donors who contributed to Smith County receiving the trailer are Pets Fur People, Mutt Nation, Smith County Animal Control and Shelter, Dallas-Fort Worth Dachshund Club Inc., the English Cocker Spaniel Club of America Health & Rescue Organization, the Hunter Hogan Foundation, Rozell Sprayer Manufacturing Co., and the Rose Country Retriever Club of East Texas.
