TYLER, Texas — A Smith County Jail inmate passed away Wednesday after she was found unresponsive.
Susan Taylor, 58, lost consciousness in the day room and was non-responsive around noon Wednesday. Medical personnel responded quickly to administer lifesaving measures, including CPR and an automated external defibrillator, according to the Smith County Sheriff's Office.
EMS arrived shortly thereafter and Taylor was taken to the emergency room, where she passed away, the sheriff's office said.
An autopsy was ordered. Per Smith County Sheriff's Office protocol, the Texas Rangers will be investigating the death.
According to jail records, Taylor had been in the Smith County Jail since March 27 on assault charges.
