Smith County firefighter returns to duty after being injured in hit-and-run

SCESD 2 confirmed that Brett Lester will be back in the field following a successful recovery from a hit-and-run crash where he was struck by a GMC Sierra 1500.

SMITH COUNTY, Texas — **EDITOR'S NOTE: The video above aired July 23, the day following Lester's injury.

A Smith County ESD 2 firefighter returned to work this week after he was injured in a hit-and-run incident on July 21.

SCESD 2 confirmed that Brett Lester will be back in the field following a successful recovery from a hit-and-run crash where he was struck by a GMC Sierra 1500 while working at the scene of a motor vehicle crash. Officials confirmed that his injuries were minor.

"There is no other place I would rather be than here helping the citizens of Smith County at a time of need," Lester said. "I can’t wait to spend many more years here and continue to uphold our motto 'Service Above Self.'"

Lester is the second firefighter to have been struck by traffic in the past moth, according to SCESD 2. Officials are still attempting to locate the suspect involved in the hit-and-run.
