Smith County Central Labor Council honors origins of Labor Day with food, fellowship at Tyler park

Claretta Allen, president of the Smith County Central Labor Council, said Labor Day is well deserved for many hard workers.

TYLER, Texas — The Smith County Central Labor Council on Monday celebrated Labor Day with food, fun and fellowship at Lindsey Park in Tyler.

The council hosted their first Labor Day picnic since the COVID-19 pandemic, where all ages were invited to join. Around 100 people attended, including multiple organizations and labor unions.

Claretta Allen, president of the Smith County Regional Labor Council, said Labor Day is well deserved for many hard workers.

"We’re so happy to get a group out together today to celebrate Labor Day," Allen said. "It’s a day of relaxation for people in the workplace that work the whole year to have a day off and celebrate labor."

Before it was a federal holiday, Labor Day was recognized by labor activists and individual states. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated in 1882, in New York City.
