Smith Co. Sheriff: Clarification of what led up to Dabrett Black's Thanksgiving arrest

Smith Co. Sheriff's Office held a press conference to set the record straight about the Dabrett Black case.

According to the Smith County Sheriff's Office, back in March of 2015, 32-year-old Dabrett Black was arrested and charged with assaulting a public servant and attempting to take a weapon from an officer.

That arrest resulted in a $50,000 bond. Sheriff Larry Smith said he felt it was time to make some comments and try to 'correct some misinterpretations of a few things'.

There was dash cam video of Black constantly punching a former Smith County deputy, Wesley Dean. Sheriff Smith said Black was incarcerated August 5, 2015 and was released March 9, 2016.

A year and nearly four months later, the Smith co. deputies arrested Black again.

The Sheriff's Office said Black smashed his vehicle into a deputy's patrol car. Smith said he was arrested for: evading arrest with a vehicle, aggravated assault against a public servant and reckless driving.

"Dabrett Black posted bond on July 31, 2017," Smith said.

Black was indicted three months later, and on November 8, Smith said Black's bond of $15,000 was increased to $400,000.

15 days later, investigators said he shot and killed trooper Damon Allen.
