Small business in downtown Tyler looks at Smith County Courthouse-related street closures with positivity

With long term street closures in the heart of downtown Tyler soon to be in pace, some small businesses are sharing that they think it will be good in the long run.

TYLER, Texas — Starting next Monday, streets that surround the Smith County Courthouse will be closed ahead of construction. Some business in downtown are worried about how it might affect them, while Moocho Burrito has a positive outlook

"I know that some of the streets are going to close and maybe affect some businesses, but this is for a good reason," said employee Victor Covarrubias

Victor Corvarrubias has worked at this family-owned business for 10 years now, and he said that business has only gotten better in downtown Tyler.

"In our experience, we’ve enjoyed more people coming and making more and more business," Covarrubias said.

These streets will remain closed for a year during the first phase of the courthouse construction, and that  will cause a loss of some street parking. However, Covarrubias said he's hopeful that doesn’t deter anyone from visiting downtown.

"We have the parking garage and it’s free, I don’t know if many people know. Park your car in the parking garage and walk maybe one block or two blocks and get some exercise and it will be great for everyone. We’ll be OK," Corvarrubias said.

So while the closure of streets my cause temporary pain, the long term outcome looks bright for downtown Tyler.

"Downtown Tyler will be better, more than before," Corvarrubias said.
