2 brothers arrested for alleged involvement in dog fighting ring in Smith County

Investigators found some dogs on treadmills chained up, and officials say the owners made them run on them.

SMITH COUNTY, Texas — Two brothers were arrested for their involvement in a suspected dog fighting ring in Smith County. 

Kerry Jones, 34, and his brother Michael Cameron Jones, 31, both of Tyler, were arrested after an investigation into a suspected dog fighting ring that led to the seizure of 52 dogs at a property in the 9000 block of County Road 4136, Smith County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Sgt. Larry Christian confirmed. 

Kerry Jones was charged with cruelty to non-livestock animals and dog fighting (participating in the earnings and providing a building) on Monday. He remains in the Smith County Jail on bonds totaling $560,000. 

Michael Jones was arrested Tuesday on a charge of cruelty to non-livestock animals (fight/lure). He remains in the Smith County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

Some of the dogs are well, but a lot of them are malnourished, according to our reporter on the scene. Investigators found some dogs on treadmills chained up, and officials say the owners made them run on them. Investigators reported that several dogs were severely injured as well.
