SHERIFF: 35 gallons of cough syrup obtained during traffic stop in Nacogdoches

While searching the vehicle, officials discovered an open bottle of cough syrup inside along with two suitcases full of commercial-grade medication.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office was able to obtain more than 35 gallons of cough syrup during a traffic stop on Sunday.

According to the press release, officials conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle committing moving violations in the 300 block of N.W. Stallings Drive on Sunday afternoon.

Officials said the driver identified as Harry Lee Parks, and passenger told deputies they were on their way back home in Memphis, Tenn., traveling from Houston.

When asked to describe their travels, both men provided information that did not align, the press release said.

A search of the vehicle was also initiated due to officers smelling a strong odor of marijuana from the men.

While searching the vehicle, officials discovered an open bottle of cough syrup inside along with two suitcases full of commercial-grade medication.

In addition, officers discovered two more suitcases containing cough syrup with marijuana, the press release said.

Overall, more than 280 bottles of 473 ml of cough syrup were seized totaling to 35.86 gallons.

Parks was later arrested for claiming ownership of the medication and was sent to the Nacogdoches County Jail for possession of a dangerous drug charge.
