SHELBY COUNTY, Texas — An East Texas man died Saturday after he was found unresponsive while waiting to be booked into the Shelby County Jail.
A 24-year-old man was taken to the Shelby County Jail on the charge of assault family violence and placed into a holding cell while waiting on booking. During a face-to-face observation by jail staff, he was found unresponsive and the staff began life-saving measures, according to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.
He was taken to the Center Emergency Department, where he was pronounced dead. A preliminary autopsy report revealed that suicide was the cause of death, the sheriff's office said.
The Texas Rangers are investigating the incident.
