SFA legend Elvin "Buddy" Lowery dies at 88

Lowery was the first player from SFA to play in the NBA.

HUNTINGTON, Texas — Stephen F. Austin University basketball legend Elvin "Buddy" Lowery died Sunday at the age of 88.

Lowery played for the Lumberjacks from 1956 to 1958, and he was the first player from SFA to play in the NBA. He played for the Detroit Pistons in 1959.

"SFA Basketball is saddened to hear of the passing of Elvin "Buddy" Lowery," the school announced on X.

The Tommie Jan and Elvin Lowery Court, where SFA plays basketball, is named after Lowery and his wife of 66 years. 

After basketball, Lowery returned to East Texas to join his brother in the timber industry, where he would spend 40 years of his life. Lowery passed peacefully in his hometown surrounded by loved ones, according to his obituary. 

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lowery Family," SFA said in an X post.
