Stephen F. Austin State University announced the death of their fourth president, who died Thursday.
William R. Johnson died Wednesday. Prior to his presidency at SFA, Johnson served as vice president of academic affairs at Texas Tech University.
“Dr. Johnson’s legacy at SFA is remarkable,” said Dr. Neal Weaver, SFA president. “His ability to lead during challenging financial times while making long-lasting contributions to our campus is a testament to his vision and resilience. His impact is felt in every corner of our university, and he will be deeply missed.”
Johnson remained an active member of the SFA community after his retirement by supporting the university through mentorship and advocacy, the university said.
His contributions to the university throughout his life include the construction of the Sesquicentennial Plaza, welcoming President Jimmy Carter to speak on campus, and hosting the exhibition of the Magna Carta at SFA. Under Johnson's leadership, the university also celebrated the addition of the one-millionth volume to the Steen Library.
