Man arrested after group shootout damages vehicles, homes in Marshall

Police arrested Earnest Lee Cooks, Jr., 18, on five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and 2 counts of deadly conduct discharging a firearm.

MARSHALL, Texas — Police arrested a man involved in a group shootout that damaged several homes and vehicles in Marshall Friday afternoon.

According to Marshall Police Department, officials responded to a call around 1 p.m. in the 300 block of Cedar Street near N. Franklin to reports of a shooting.

Police arrested Earnest Lee Cooks, Jr., 18, on five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of deadly conduct discharging a firearm.

“Patrol officers’ quick response and immediate investigative follow-up resulted in an arrest, which sends a clear message that we will not tolerate this senseless violence in our community," said Cliff Carruth, Marshall police chief.

According to the press release, when officials arrived on scene they discovered a mass confrontation involving 8 to 10 individuals escalated into an exchange of gunfire between the two groups of teenagers.

No injuries have been reported but several homes and vehicles in the vicinity of the shooting have been damaged.

Officials continue to investigate the incident and additional charges may be filed.
