Section of Olive Street in Dallas officially becomes 'Nowitzki Way'

DALLAS, Texas — Former Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki can now add another accolade to his name.

On Wednesday, part of Olive Street in Dallas was renamed "Nowitzki Way" in honor of the 41-year-old former forward's 21-year career with the Mavericks. 

The quarter-mile stretch of Nowitzki Way runs next to the American Airlines Center, where the renaming ceremony took place.

Nowitzki spent his entire career with the Mavs since he stepped on the NBA scene in 1998 at the age of 20. He was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks with the ninth overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft and was traded to Dallas.

He led the Mavs to two Western Conference championships, as well as the only NBA title in franchise history in 2011.

He also racked up a plethora of individual awards, including:

  • NBA Champion (2011)
  • NBA Finals MVP (2011)
  • NBA MVP (2007)
  • 14x NBA All-Star
  • 4x NBA All-Star First Team
  • 5x NBA All-Star Second Team
  • 3x NBA All-Star Third Team
  • 50-40-90 Club
  • NBA 3-Point Shootout Champion (2006)
  • NBA Teammate of the Year (2017)

The future hall of famer is also the only player in NBA history to record at least 31,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, 3,000 assists, 1,000 steals, 1,000 blocks and 1,000 three-pointers. He ranks No. 6 on the NBA All-Time Points Leaders list at 31,510, only behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Michael Jordan.
